Lake Mungo

Lake Mungo is one of Australia's most significant archaeological and cultural sites. Located within the Willandra Lakes Region. It used to be a freshwater lake where Ingenious Australians lived for at least 50,000 years. The site gained worldwide recognition after the discovering the remains of a younger indigenous lady in 1968, proving to be one of the earliest examples of cremation. In 1974, archaeologist uncovered the complete skeleton of a man. Their remains, dated to around 40,000–42,000 years old, revealed some of the earliest known evidence of ritual burial and cremation globally. These discoveries transformed our understanding of Australia's human history and confirmed the connection of the region's Traditional Owners Paakantji, Mutthi Mutthi, and Ngiyampaa peoples of the land.
